Here are some general guidelines to insure a healthy dog!
1. Feed your dog a high quality diet.
2.Provide plenty of clean fresh water. .
3. Keep your dogs feeding and living areas clean.
4.Wash or change your dogs bedding on a regular basis.
5.Have your dog checked by a veterinarian, for regular checkups, at least once a year.
6.Keep vaccinations current.
7.Have your veterinarian check your dog's feces for parasites on a regular basis.
8.Give your dog bathes on a regular basis to keep the coat clean and healthy. This should also be done before any Therapy Dog visit.
9.Brush your dog"s teeth daily
10.Keep the toenails trimmed and smooth. (I use an acrylic nail file for this).
11.Use good flea control.

Things  to do or be aware of when You make Therapy Dog Visits?

1.First and foremost keep you and your dog safe.
2.Keep your dog on a leash unless there is a need, as in a demonstration of tricks, this insures the safety of you, your dog and the people you are visiting.
3.Provide a safe quiet place for your dog to rest from therapy activity.
4.Don't forget your dog's need for water. Buy a portable water dish to take with you. It can be purchased at most pet supply store for about $5
5.Supervise all interaction between your dog and people on your therapy visit..
7.Evaluate each situation where you are asked to provide therapy, so you will be effective as a therapy tool.
8.Identify the needs of the person who you are visiting. Staff can direct you to those who are most in need.
9.Identify your dog's ability to interact with the patient.
10.Avoid situations where you think stress or abuse to your dog might occur. Not every patient is a candidate for a therapy visit.
11.Stop any visit where you suspect your dog is becoming stressed.
Understand that your dog may need down time in-between each visit to refocus and reorient himself or herself.
If you feel yourself becoming stressed or frustrated end the therapy visit. Your emotions transfer to your dog and can cause a disaster.
